About Us

Accent Language Consultants is led by its Director, Amanda Clement. In addition to having over 20 years of experience in delivering translation and language consultancy services to clients in the UK and Europe in both the public and private sectors, Amanda holds the following academic qualifications:

    •  BA (Hons) in European Studies (French) from the University of London.
    •  MA in Translation from the University of Surrey.
    •  LLB (Bachelor of Law) from the University of East London.
    •  Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists.
    •  Associate of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting.

In her most recent role, Amanda spent over 16 years on the senior management team leading linguistic and cultural services for the Metropolitan Police Service. She served on various committees, including the Interpreters' Working Group and the Interdepartmental Committee on Linguistic Services and worked closely with the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and other criminal justice system agencies on language policy issues. Amanda has also participated in various EC JHA Grotius and Agis funded projects on equal access to justice across language and culture in the European Union.

Key Achievements

Some of Amanda's other key achievements include:

•  Co-writing a chapter entitled Interpreters and Translators in the Criminal Legal Process, published in Witness Testimony: Psychological, Investigative and Evidential Perspectives Heaton-Armstrong, Shepherd, Gudjonsson, Wolchover (eds) 978-0-19-927809-1 (2006).

•  Representing the Metropolitan Police Service in several European Union-funded projects to establish and disseminate minimum standards for legal interpreters and translators from all EU Member States.

•  Producing best practice guidelines to govern the working relationship between interpreters/translators and police officers. Engaging with stakeholders at a national level through the Association of Chief Police Officers to explore policy development and improvement of standards nationally and internationally.

•  Presenting at various national and international seminars and conferences on interpreting and translation in the criminal justice system. Recent presentations delivered include a workshop hosted by EULITA the European Legal Interpreters and Translators Association on mechanisms to determine quality standards in the provision of interpretation and translation services as required by the Directive 2010/64/EU.

•  Developing IT and Data Security recommendations for freelance interpreters and translators working with the Metropolitan Police Service to ensure compliance with increased levels of confidentiality and security required of the UK police and criminal justice sectors.

•  Managing responses to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Data Protection Act (DPA) enquiries as well as Parliamentary and Mayor's Questions regarding the Metropolitan Police Service's language policies and use of interpreters and translators.
